Children & Sleep Apnea? How can Apnealink Help?

A child’s snoring is serious business

A major red flag indicating the presence of obstructive sleep apnea in children is the same for adults, which is snoring. A screening test like Apnealink can be used or a sleep study can be done. Typically, when adults snore, sleep apnea is suspected. When the situation involves children, 3% to 12% of all children snore, and around 1%-3% percent of all children have sleep apnea.

Causes
Infected, enlarged tonsils and adenoids can be the most common cause of sleep apnea. If allergies, poor muscle tone in the mouth/upper airway, narrow air passages, and underdeveloped maxillae are present, then there is more to consider. As children develop, so can the previous physiological conditions.

Treatment Options
The surgery which removes enlarged tonsils/adenoids is the likely treatment. However, there are several more choices when managing OSA. And it all depends on the cause and severity of the obstruction. Oral/dental appliances can assist older children, especially in those who have complete facial bone growth. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is also an option.

Symptoms
The symptoms of sleep apnea in children can present in unique ways, i.e. poor physical development and difficulty gaining weight. By comparison, adults tend to gain weight due to hormone fluctuations which are influenced by a lack of sleep,

Asking parents about their child’s symptoms may include all or some of the following.

  • Breathing pauses during sleep
  • Mouth breathing
  • Poor attention span
  • Behavioral issues
  • Poor performance at school
  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Difficulty with concentration
  • Bedwetting
  • Difficulty growing and gaining weight

Diagnosis Options

Many who are suspected of sleep apnea undergo a sleep test. Although a sleep test in a lab is one of the best tools, the sleep test is something they’d rather not do for various reasons.

There is an at-home alternative which allows the user to improve their overall comfort level while doing a test and be among familiar surroundings. The test is performed using the Apnea link, you can find out more here. You can also view the youtube video for specifics here.

Cpapclinic offers Apnealink, whereby the user agrees to a two-night effort and returns the apnea link results for assessment. Make arrangements by calling 1.877.430.2727 to obtain an Apnealink at-home study.
