Common Indicators Of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)

Common Indicators Of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)

Determining if you are suffering from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) may be difficult especially if you sleep alone. A sleep study is a test that records what happens while you are asleep and is the best tool to determine if you have this sleep disorder. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), the more common type of sleep apnea, is a condition in which the upper passages of the airways close of, interfering with your breathing and may deprive you of the needed oxygen. This usually results to you waking up and begin breathing again.

Common Indications of Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Suffering sleep apnea can impact negatively on a person’s quality of life and may even lead to more serious diseases such as heart problems, osteoporosis, and diabetes. Knowing positively that you have this sleep disorder is very vital so that treatment may be implemented in order to prevent serious complications. To help determine if you have Obstructive Sleep Apnea, here are the more common indications:

Loud and Constant Snoring

The snoring of a person with Obstructive Sleep Apnea should be distinguished from ordinary snoring since it is normal for people to snore frequently and loudly. But if this snoring is extremely loud that it may awaken your bed partner or those in the nearby bedrooms, this may be a hint that you have Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

Pause in Breathing and Gasping Episodes

If the loud snoring is accompanied by pauses in breathing and gasping episodes during sleep, then chances are you may be suffering from sleep apnea. Perhaps this gasping and waking up to breathe may be the best indications for this sleep disorder. This may last a few seconds and is done very frequently, sometimes over a hundred times per night. If you have a bed partner, it would be best to record these incidents in order to confirm the disorder and may also be used when consulting with a healthcare provider.

Treatment

As stated earlier, sleep apnea can be very serious that it may lead to serious medical conditions and may have psychosocial impacts. If you have sleep apnea, it is imperative to see your doctor immediately. He may recommend treatments options that may include the very effective continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device to treat your obstructive sleep apnea.
