In today’s fast paced “get it done, sleep later “world, sleep disorder seem to be increasing rapidly. This can have huge implications on a person’s health and safety. Current literature includes having the right sleep as a major component to achieving optimum health, along with proper diet, a positive mental attitude, and a healthy lifestyle that includes adequate physical activity. And a lack of sleep removes or decreases life quality in kind which leads us into a discussion about sleep disorders themselves.
Aside from increasing the risk of developing numerous medical conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes, sleep disorders and specifically sleep deprivation may lead to poor work performance, accidents while driving, injuries in the work place, and mood disorders. Addressing any sleep disorder is therefore very crucial. These sleep disorders may include the following:
Insomnia
Insomnia affects approximately 30 percent of the adult population, making it a very common sleep disorder. People suffering from insomnia have trouble falling asleep and may lie awake for several hours. If they do fall asleep, they wake up very easily and may find going back to sleep very difficult. Causes may have to do with medical conditions, mental issues, and poor sleep habits.
Restless Legs Syndrome
Restless legs syndrome, which is not a sleep disorder, is when a person feels discomfort and has the urge to move the legs. There is also much twitching while lying down which may only contribute to the difficulty of sleeping. Even while asleep, these leg movements can wake you up.
Narcolepsy
Narcolepsy is a sleep disorder characterized by extreme sleepiness during the day. Even if enough time was spent in bed the previous night, people with this condition may still feel sleepy and often require frequent naps. These people usually dream while napping and may be unable to move immediately when waking up.
Sleepwalking
Although very common in children, adults have also been known to sleepwalk especially for those who used to experience this condition while in their younger years. Sleepwalking, another particular sleep disorder, occurs during the deeper stages of sleep and the person may do a lot of activities without waking up and may not recall what they did.
Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is a serious condition that affects a number of people especially the male overweight aging males. A person with sleep apnea may have his or her breathing repeatedly stop and start during sleep. There is a tendency to snore loudly and to feel very tired despite having slept the whole night.
Lastly, Sleep apnea can either be obstructive sleep apnea or central sleep apnea. This is a potentially dangerous condition and requires medical attention. The doctor may prescribe medications and offer suggestions that may manage the condition. Managing this condition with the use a CPAP device has been known to greatly benefit people suffering from obstructive sleep apnea.
