Understanding your sleep health, sleep apnea and CPAP therapy

Proper Diet and CPAP Therapy May Alleviate High Blood Pressure

blood pressure guageIf you’re suffering from high blood pressure, you may also have a sleep disorder. Quite often, high blood pressure co-exists with one particular sleep disorder, which is known as obstructive sleep apnea. Many people who do have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and high blood pressure are also overweight.

In order to relieve the symptoms of high blood pressure (while also lowering the risk of long-term health consequences related to this serious health condition), dieting and seeking out appropriate therapy for sleep apnea will be the best approach.

Why Does This Two-prong Approach Work So Well?

By dieting and alleviating high blood pressure through the right continuous positive airway pressure therapy, it’s possible to relieve strain on the body. Because there is a link between waist circumference and risk of high blood pressure, eating a healthy diet that includes low-fat foods and moderate exercise will be an important part of treating a high blood pressure condition without drugs or surgery.

For men, waist circumferences of 40 inches or greater may trigger (or exacerbate) high blood pressure. For women, waist measurements of greater than 35 inches may contribute to blood pressure-related health issues.

However, losing weight is often insufficient to “cure” a high blood pressure health problem. When obstructive sleep apnea co-exists with high blood pressure, it’s important to treat this serious sleep disorder in order to see reductions in blood pressure levels.

Symptoms of Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea include loud, intermittent snoring and stop-starts in breathing that continue all through the night.

Arrested breathing taxes the body, leaving the sleep apnea sufferer feeling exhausted each morning, even though they’ve slept through the night.

If you suffer from morning headaches, irritability or mental fog, obstructive sleep apnea may be the reason why. This health issue is often linked with weight gain.

Increases in neck circumference stretch tissue within the throat, slackening muscles that are used to breathe. However, it is possible to be at a healthy weight and suffer from this sleep disorder.

How to Treat Obstructive Sleep Apnea

DeVilbiss CPAPThe number one, doctor-recommended treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea is CPAP therapy. This continuous positive airway pressure therapy happens when CPAP machines and CPAP nasal masks are used in order to deliver measured doses of pressurized air during sleep.

CPAP mouth breathers are used to deliver air via machines, and these masks and nasal pillows are now more comfortable than ever before.

Typical CPAP equipment and CPAP accessories are quite affordable, and they provide sleep apnea sufferers with access to drug-free therapy that is safe, healthy and natural.

Suitable for all ages, including children, CPAP therapy arrests stop-starts in breathing before they start, allowing the body to receive the vital oxygen that it needs to function effectively. That’s why men, women and children all over the world benefit from CPAP therapy.

For those with high blood pressure and sleep apnea, choosing a healthy diet and adding CPAP therapy will be the best ways to enjoy measurable reductions in blood pressure levels, over the short and long term.

Since the cost of CPAP therapy may be covered under health insurance plans, it’s important to see a doctor if you suspect that you sufffer from this common sleep disorder. Without CPAP therapy, you may never get the restful sleep that you deserve.
